The Home Care Franchise Downfall

When choosing home care are you (or your insurance) paying for competent quality care or are you paying for the company’s franchised logo?  I found through the years of working in the healthcare field that nationally recognized and branded health care company employees are underpaid and under qualified.  Why is that?  Of course sprinkled here and there were some amazing caregivers with outstanding competency.  Unfortunately I also saw that throughout time, these same amazing caregivers started to slack in their motivation to provide quality care.  Eventually causing them to quit their job in search of yet another branded company paying potentially slightly more, yet still “peanuts for pay”.  This in turn causing the branded national company to become more so understaffed than they already were and needing to immediately hire pretty much anyone off the street or even worse, someone coming straight out of their community service for their most recent DUI offense.

Why do branded health care companies pay peanuts per hour wages when what YOU (or your insurance) are paying per hour for your care is at a minimum 3 times the amount your caregiver/nurse actually gets paid per hour?  The answers are simple.  You (or your insurance company) are paying for the company brand and logo, literally.  It costs an entrepreneur desiring to buy a franchised in home care company at minimum $45,000 franchise fee plus working capital for additional anticipated  start-up costs.  With the minimum net worth required to be at $300,000.  These are just the franchise costs.  Add on to this (depending on your state) the costs associated with state licensing.  I don’t know many people if any who have that kind of money on hand.  Therefore it’s reasonable to say that loans are needed to buy a branded home care franchise.  With loans now gloomy overhead, it’s then reasonable to furthermore say that at the top of the list of expenses to be paid would be the outrageous loan first and employees last with whatever may be left over.

Many times throughout my career in the health care field, I fell for – emotionally – buying in to a company’s brand, logo and mission statement.  Very quickly I came to realize why my colleagues were burned out, stressed out, and slacking in their care.  Clients were frustrated and disappointed with the care they were receiving and more so angry that practically once a week if not more, a new caregiver showed up and the previous one gone.

This seems to be a consistency in the health care field when working for or receiving care from a branded nationally recognized health care franchise.  Where do we find solutions for this Home Care Franchise Downfall?  The answer is in private-owned Private Duty Home Care… without the franchised brand and logo.
